He is the son of Russian film director Aleksei Yuryevich German and screenwriter Svetlana Igorevna Karmalita, and a grandson of writer Yuri German. He graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in 2001 and went on to work at the Lenfilm film studio.
