Fango Rosso

Fango Rosso (red mud), is the toxic waste of the mining extraction. It covers up the hills of Sulcis, land where the astonishing beauty of the landscape collides with a history betrayed promises, progress as a mirage, politic as deceit.

The Contestant

Francesca, a freelance gym teacher, lives alone with her three sons in Sardinia. She's a woman, a mother, a worker who struggles every day to survive. And she's my aunt. The economical crisis goes on, and her efforts now don't seem to be enough to maintain the life status that she desires for her and her children. That's how she decides to take a chance and enter in a TV quiz show... How her dreams to change her life situation manage to coexist with her everyday struggles?

Frarìa

Angelo is 15 years old and lives in a small village in Sardinia in the early post-WWI period. He is very shy, and he is teased because of the disability of his elder brother, Agostino. He cannot defend himself and he would like to show more self-confidence, like his best friend, the charismatic Bastiano. Life flows in an apparent rural stillness, but the arrival of the Fascist Blackshirts disrupts the peace of the small community. While the villagers celebrate in the square in front of a big bonfire, Angelo can no longer hesitate and must decide which side he is on.

A hundred years of images researched and found, Fragments of film, family reels, pixels. A martyr saint, a warrior. Saint Efisio, an icon who moves the people. A holiday, a rite which repeats outside of time and brings with it the masks of dominations past and present, of an island; Sardinia. What escapes? What remains? Question and answer is the foundation of editing And renews the past in another past. In this encounter of deferred glances, the holy day is renewed again in memory and in dream, far from known places.

Raw materials such as wood and iron are brought back to life by the passage of air, thus generating sound, music: a magical combination of science and imagination, a physical fact that nevertheless conceals a mysterious aspect for the listener. The mechanical reproduction of this miraculous breath is ensured by skilled hands, which care for, build and restore the individual parts of the musical instrument, giving it a new lease of life. The centuries-old knowledge of the art of organ building, handed down from generation to generation, finds its home in a workshop in the district of Segariu, a small town in the Marmilla region, at the gateway to central Sardinia. Beyond the craftsmanship process there seems to be an invisible and unstoppable motion that survives the millennia: the pursuit of the breath of nature, the wind, which for the ancient Greeks (Πνεúµα) was also the spirit.
