The Oka Legacy

The Oka Legacy is a POV documentary that explores how the Oka Crisis has influenced Indigenous identity in Canada. In the summer of 1990, all eyes were on the small town of Oka, Quebec. Triggered by plans to expand a golf course on ancestral land, it was a standoff between the Mohawk people of Kanehsatake, the police and eventually the army. The Oka Crisis lasted 78 days and drew worldwide attention. The standoff had a profound impact on Indigenous peoples in Canada setting the tone for Indigenous resistance throughout the ‘90s.

Mohawk Girls

For three teenage girls growing up in Kahnawake — and indeed, all teenagers on the reserve — life can be quite confusing. If they want to move away to pursue new experiences — perhaps in nearby Montreal — they risk losing credibility, or worse yet, their rights as Mohawk women. Of course, if they stay, their opportunities in the tiny community are limited. With insight, humour and heart, director Tracey Deer (who left Kahnawake to attend school and pursue filmmaking) returns to her community to follow these Mohawk girls and tell their stories. Her deeply emotional documentary reveals the complex hope, heartache and promise of growing up Indigenous in the 21st century.

Just One of the Girls

To save himself from the biggest bully in school, Chris Calder has to dress himself up like a girl to avoid Curt. When the disguise works, he is forced to stay a girl - with disastrous results. Curt falls for the new girl in school while Chris falls for the bully's sister, a beautiful blonde cheerleader. High school is hard enough without worrying if your wig is on straight. Chris soon find out he can't hid in his sister's skirts. But is he man enough to reveal his secret and fight for the girl he loves?
