Diary of Monita

The pompous heiress Monita is used to suitors vying for her affection and is embittered by the aloof, morose manner of the new student Fannie. Monita's aunt Bei grows increasingly wary of her niece's affection for Fan—an impoverished student who has to work to support himself through school—and presents to the principal vicious slanders against Fan. Already devastated by Fan's expulsion and departure without farewell, Monita is dealt a further blow when her father dies suddenly in the US after the collapse of his business. A near victim of sexual assault, Monita leaves the aunt and her licentious lover and works as a helper of the painter Szi Ming in his studio, but is soon given the boot by his jealous wife. A year passes. Monita is chosen to be the maid of honour at her best friend Ann's wedding which reunites her with Fan. Fan has returned from his sailing tenure to open a restaurant named after the love of his life, Monita. The estranged couple rekindles their love.

Ladies First

The two young men seek to approach their objects of affection on the pretext of inviting the dream date of each other to an outing in the country during which they are teased and made fun of by the two women. To wipe away the shame, Wang and Li plot to intoxicate the women, who pretend to be in a drunken stupor while calling for help from their uncle and father respectively. In front of the elders, Chen declares her love for Wang, and Zhang for Li. Hit with the realisation of the women's sentiments, the two men reciprocate their respective admirers with their well-deserved love.

Part 1 ended with Jianbai and Su Yanan among the students fleeing the invading Japanese. Part 2 follows the efforts of all four characters to participate in the war effort. Su Yanan joins the army and fights. Jianbai enlists to be near her. A-Lan becomes a nurse at a battlefront hospital and Qiuming entertains the troops. (Grace Chang, Cathay's leading musical star at the time, performs some rousing patriotic numbers in these scenes.) Jianbai is reunited with Su in the battlefield, but...

Ostensibly a romantic comedy about mistaken identity, this film stars Kitty Ting Hao in two roles, the first as poor flower girl Fangfang and rich relation of a family in Hong Kong, who arrived in Hong Kong to see if she can feel better with the warmer climate. She meets Xihong, played by Kelly Lai Chen, who is the son in the family in Hong Kong. He is, of course, smitten with her, but when the secret is out, will he still feel the same?

Jin Wenou falls out with his business-minded father when he decides on painting instead of studying business. Mary, his fiancée, finances him to get his own studio. One day his dying father wishes to see Mary. Unable to contact her, Wenou gets Wanping to stand in. Wenou's father miraculously recovers upon seeing Wanping. He is infuriated when Wenou tells him that his fiancée is actually Mary and declares Wanping as the only heiress to his fortune.

June Bride

To marry her fiance Dong Jifang, Wang Danlin and her father Zhuoran take the cruise home to Hong Kong. The daughter fails to see eye to eye with her father who covets after Dong's money for speculation. On the ship, she suffers intensive courtship from the Filipino Chinese Lin Yamang. Meanwhile, Dong is eager to match his old frame Bai Jin with the sailor Mai Qin, but Mai mistakes Danlin for Bai and falls in love with her, resulting in a morass of troubles. Finding out Dong's affair with Bai, Danlin calls off the wedding in anger. Dong responds by deciding to marry Jin. Their nuptials are saved with the timely intervention of Mai.

Anatole France's The Man Who Married a Dumb Wife has been adapted into three different Hong Kong films in the 1950s alone. These two adaptations stray from the source material considerably in genre, characterisation and plot, turning a farce about married life into localised romantic comedies that emphasise family values. The Beauty and the Dumb follows the couple from their meet-cute to the misunderstandings they encounter before the inevitable happy ending. The heir of a bank (Huang He) falls in love at first sight with one of the employees' daughter (Li Lihua), but their burgeoning relationship is nearly derailed when the girl's father intervenes to help his dumb daughter land a rich husband.
