Grateful Dead Meet-Up At The Movies 2023

A year after Brent Mydland's passing, the Grateful Dead returned to the summer stadium circuit, playing Chicago's Soldier Field for the first time, with two keyboard players filling the seat Brent left vacant. Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick’s presence and musical contributions reinvigorated and revitalized the Grateful Dead, and the inspiration of the Dead's playing was palpable. On a Saturday night in front of 60,000 fans, the Dead played what is often considered one of the greatest shows of the Bruce-Vince era, up there with the second Giants Stadium show from a few days earlier. The Soldier field show was filled with favorites, including “Shakedown Street,”“Brown-Eyed Women,” “Playing In The Band,” “Terrapin Station,” and “Dark Star.” From the original six-camera video feed that appeared on the stadium's big screens and the pristine soundboard audio, Chicago 6/22/91 is an incredible performance start-to-finish.

View from the Vault, Volume One, sometimes known simply as View from the Vault, is the first release in a series of DVDs and companion soundtracks by the Grateful Dead known as "View from the Vault". The audio is taken from the soundboard and the video from the video screens at the concerts. The first volume was recorded and filmed at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh on July 8, 1990 with bonus material recorded two days earlier at Cardinal Stadium, Louisville. This project was done with humor, truth, and sarcasm. At the University of California, Santa Cruz, UCSC, where I went to college, there were many fans of The Grateful Dead. They called themselves Deadheads. I had not heard of the band before attending the school. I listened to the music, and I didn't understand why people felt so passionately about the band. I was intrigued. So in 1986, I decided to try and understand these people and the music they loved, and to create a video of my quest. This documentary project is the result. Enjoy.

Grateful Dead: Fare Thee Well - Playing for Change, Chicago, IL

Ending their long strange trip of 50 years, the surviving members of the Grateful Dead played their final "Fare Thee Well" concert at Chicago's Soldier Field Sunday night, urging a massive fervent crowd to take the feeling of the night, "Remember it, take it home and do some good with it - please, be kind.” In honor of the 50th anniversary event, the great Playing For Change released a video of their own cadre of global artists covering "Ripple." "The ripple effect," said Playing co-founder Mark Johnson, "is that the next generation gets to learn to play music all over the world.” Net proceeds from the video will benefit the Playing For Change Foundation’s music schools and programs for children worldwide.

Grateful Dead: Sunshine Daydream

Sunshine Daydream is a concert film starring the Grateful Dead. On a blistering summer day in 1972, the Grateful Dead took the stage on the grounds of the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta, Oregon. for what would become one of the most legendary concerts of the band’s storied history. Considered to be the Merry Pranksters last "Acid Test", the concert offers a snapshot of the band at the peak of its playing prowess. The setlist that day included memorable performance of "Sugaree, " "Deal, " "Black-Throated Wind, " "Greatest Story Ever Told, " "Bird Song" and a mind-melting version of "Dark Star" that stretches over 30 minutes. The show, which was recorded and filmed but never released, has since become the most-requested live show in Grateful Dead history. A digitally remastered and reedited official version of the film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on September 17, 2013.

Jerry Garcia Band: Live at Shoreline

Introducing... Roy Buchanan

He's been called "the greatest rock guitarist in the world" The Rolling Stones once asked him to join their group And hardly anyone has ever heard of him. His name is Roy Buchanan, and he is one of the most talented - and enigmatic - figures in American music today. NET presents him to a nationwide audience for the first time in a show entitled "Introducing Roy Buchanan!" on PBS' Special of the Week. Rock impresario Bill Graham, who once ran the fabled Fillmore's East and West, will host the program, which includes a live concert from New York by Buchanan and his rock group. In a filmed portion, Buchanan displays his virtuosity in other musical genres as he performs with country-and-western stars Merle Haggard and Roy Nichols, jazz artist Mundell Lowe, and the Johnny Otis blues band. In the 16 years since Buchanan left his home in Pixley, CA, at the age of 15 and drifted eastward, his musicianship has become almost legendary in the musical underground.
