Juhan Smuul

Juhan Smuul (February 18, 1922 – April 13, 1971) was an Estonian writer. Until 1954 he used the given name Johannes Schmuul. Smuul was born in Koguva village on the island of Muhu to Jüri and Ruudu Schmuul (née Tuulik). He had three older sisters: Salme, Linda, and Liisa and one younger sister, Aliide, as well as six half-siblings from his father's first marriage. He wrote several novels, often based on life in his native island. He also authored several travelogues. His most famous is The Frozen Book (Jäine raamat), about a Soviet expedition to Antarctica. Smuul also wrote four screenplays. They are: Kirjad Sõgedate külast (1966), Keskpäevane praam (1967), Metskapten (1971), Siin me oleme! (1979) (TV)

The Vacationers

Fisherman Ärni has decided to take vacationers for midsummer due to the poor catch of fish. The plan is not bad, but extremely troublesome guests arrive at his beautiful farm in Muhumaa: Mrs. Sohvia, her husband Johan, their son Junior and Sohvia's beautiful sister Erna with her businessman cavalier Ivo. From first glance, it is clear that Ärni and his wife Laine will have a hard time with these vacationers.

Here We Are

On a nice summer day a funny little car rolls over a peaceful farm yard of Muhu island. The family that withdraws from the vehicle is quite odd-looking: an overbearing madam, a henpecked stammering husband and a mystical red-head. This quiet vacation turns out to be a frantic day with romance, unexpected turns and fisticuffs between suitors.

Forest Captain

Sailing to South America, the sailing ship "Fortuna" gets stuck in a calm in the middle of the Atlantic. The Midday Ferry

The events take place in Estonia in a summer in the 1960s. The Boy and the Girl want to go from mainland Estonia to the island of Saaremaa, but they do not have any money to buy the ticket to the ferry. They manage to hide themselves into a lorry that carries hay. Because they are smoking while they are on the lorry, a fire breaks out. The problem is, that the ferry in the middle of the sea.
