Mimaroğlu Remix Project

A collection of 8mm film reels from İlhan Mimaroğlu’s archive—once tucked away in whisky boxes—has found new life through art. Curated by director Serdar Kökçeoğlu and producer Dilek Aydın, the project brings together visual artists and musicians to reimagine these long-lost images. Over thirty artists transformed the footage into fifteen distinct audiovisual pieces, blending experimental soundscapes with contemporary video art. The project concludes with a special highlight: the first-ever screening of Mimaroğlu’s silent short film about a street jazz festival, accompanied by Erdem Helvacıoğlu’s dark jazz score.

Palms

An 8mm found film was burned during projection. The remnants of the film found themselves in a digital scanning device instead of the garbage. The found pieces, which were transferred to digital media one by one, frame by frame, were brought together on the editing table. The fragile face of the analogue film, which emerged with time and storage conditions, was preserved and the faded film surface was colored. This found footage has been turned into a ‘post-production’ film and set on a new narration based on the appropriation. The daydream of a lonely person is turned into a movie, with the remaining frames put together. Each image tries to make you feel the timelessness of this dreamer.

I Was A Ghost Myself

I was a ghost myself is a film following a ghost’s footsteps, psychogeographically trailing through a city where the ancient intertwines with the modern. The ghost haunts this itinerary of places projecting its haunts as light in moving images. As an archaeologist, the ghost portrays the present to uncover the past layer by layer through cracks and reveals, exposing herself with her memories and of others who have come and gone before. During two years of shooting, the filmmaker visits the town she grew up in and the city she later lived in. Starting in the city’s historical peninsula, in the ruinous dungeons she asks ‘is there cinema after death?’ She then visits her childhood town to see her grandmother’s grave, her old family house and school. Filmed entirely with expired/old stock super 8mm film, handmade camera lenses and scratched film technique, the beams of light, dust and aged texture of the film compose the ghost in its emotional state.
