Four Little Films: Frost Table, Tholos, Jasmine Tea, and Garden
Frost Table was filmed at dawn on the 1st of January 2008. It was so cold that the camera would barely turn, until the sun came up. The film is a very modest record of a moment in a place, with camera-movement making reference to the passage of days. Tholos is a film of a Mycenaean tomb at Nichoria in Messenia, Greece. Jasmine Tea unknowingly reprised a project given to students at at least one university, when they are short of ideas: make a film of a cup of tea! Garden examines an area of my garden, which can be sombre or joyful. Starting with minutiae, the film works its way outwards.Year:
2009

2008

Across the Valley
Across the Valley was shot, and the sound gathered, between July 2004 and January 2006, in the Cevennes, in the south of France. The film is from a single vantage point, a small area of flatness on the side of a steep vaclley. I filmed the view of the landscape from this point, through three of the four seasons, as well as elements of the scene closer to the camera. The resulting film draws on, and develops, my existing interests in the time-based representation of simultaneity, and in the temporal and sequencing possibilities inherent to film editing.Year:
2006

Winter Woods
Winter Woods, made in the Cévennes in the south of France in December 2003, presents an epiphany of light in a mountain valley.Year:
2006

Tidemills
A placid 8.5 minute seaside film, filmed at Tidemills beach near Newhaven on the Sussex coast in summer 2003. It was shot on film (Kodak EXR 7248 as far as I remember) but only ever finished on DV. The sound is mono, recorded entirely where the footage was filmed, and entirely non-sync. There is one tiny audio dropout, where some oxide has dropped-off the now quite old master tape. The SuperSeaCat no longer runs between Newhaven end Dieppe, having been replaced by a much larger ferry, and parts of the land immediately behind the beach are now threatened with industrial development.Year:
2003
Three Short Films
Three short films, made in 1997-99. The originals are 16mm prints with optical sound. Titles are 'Room with Two Mirrors', 'By the Woodyard' and 'Midday Shade'.Year:

Views From a City
A film made between 1991 and 1993 as part of an Arts Council/Channel 4 series of commissions collectively entitled 'Eleventh Hour'. The film was not popular with those who commissioned it and was never broadcast, although it was shown in its original format, 16mm print, at a number of festivals. The film is a kind of personal reflection, in three linked sections, on cities and time, and on seeing, recording and the film medium. It is 18' 51" long, with mono sound.Year:
1993

Cornish Winter Reeds and Skies
A short black-and-white silent film, shot in Cornwall in 1980, but not finished as a print until around 1989. Edited to a more-or-less strict mathematical rhythm in terms of numbers of frames within a shot (with some aberrations) , the film has a skeletal narrative running through it.Year:
1989

Sanday
Shot on Sanday, one of the Orkney islands, the film is in four sections, each representing (and transforming) the filmmaker's actions in and experience of a place at a particular time. Drawing on the qualities of these places and the long history of human habitation of the landscape (evidence for which goes back to 3500 BC), Nick Collins' intention was to make possible the experience of a series of linked mental/emotional states, seen through a landscape and movement within it.Year:
1988

Valletta
An early film by British experimental filmmaker Nick Collins. It combines bulbous, rapid-motion abstractions of greenery with a portrait of a cat, showing these elements individually and then projecting them on top of each other.Year:
1985

Looking In and Out (A Winter Diary)
"A short 16mm black-and-white sound film, from 1986. Closer to being a psychodrama than any of my other films, it centres on images are projected onto and refilmed from a misted-up window."Year:
1986

Winter into Spring
A little silent film from 1985, shot on Super8 and blown up to 16mm/reworked on the optical printer at the LFMC. The film comments on its time through its imagery, and at least to its maker still contains some of the feeling of that time.Year:
1985
