Deacons for Defense

Inspired by a true story, this drama is set in 1965, not long after passage of the Civil Rights Act. Despite the Act, the African-American citizens of Bogalusa are still treated like third-class citizens, their fundamental rights as human beings persistently trampled by the white power structure, in general, and the local branch of the KKK. The story follows the formation of local black men, particularly ex-war veterans who after the struggles become too overbearing organizes the group, "Deacons for defense", an all-black defense group dedicated to patrolling the black section of town and protecting its residents from the more violent aspects of "white backlash."

Conviction

The story of Carl Upchurch who experiences jail as a young adult. While in prison, a compassionate teacher helps turn his life around through education and religion. He in turn is inspired to help other troubled youths.

Love and Treason

Kate is a Naval officer whose married to a Marine. When she learns her husband is committing treason she turns him in. He's sent to prison and she divorces him and would have to deal with the stigma of being married to a traitor. A few years later, her husband escapes from prison and the consensus is that he's going after her. And he approaches her but doesn't do anything to her. She thinks he's up to something and tries to find out what it is.

In 1957, black lawyer John Williams has to defend his nephew Charlie, who is accused of strangling a white boy to death. John doesn't believe Charlie did it, and although Charlie confesses, John wants to find out the real truth.
