Résurrection

Resurrection forms a diptych with Requiem (2019) – a striking meditation on the exhaustion and disappearance of all things – and takes up in a spectacular way the question of the aftermath: the question of a hypothetical renewal. The Stadium de Vitrolles designed by Rudy Ricciotti has been preserved in a state of beauty ravaged by twenty-five years of abandonment and clandestine occupations. Inside this iconic building Romeo Castellucci tackles the enigma of a mysterious rebirth. Resurrection is undoubtedly the most popular of all Mahler's symphonies.

Gallant Indies

Stéphane Lissner, director of the Paris Opera, entrusts the staging of the opera-ballet Les Indes galantes to the visual artist Clément Cogitore. Based on the experience of his short film Les Indes galantes, the artist updates Jean-Philippe Rameau's baroque masterpiece (1735) by bringing together lyric song and urban dance. The choreography is entrusted to Bintou Dembélé who supervises dancers from krump, popping, voguing or even experimental hip hop. From rehearsals to the Premiere, Philippe Béziat films the meeting of urban dancers with the lyric institution and invites the spectator to share a human and artistic experience.

Antoine’s four Seasons

Ten year-old Anthony has red hair, as did Antonio Vivaldi. For his birthday, his grandfather gives him a book. He would have preferred a video game, but what can you expect from a grandfather who spends his time building violins in his workshop? But this is a magic book! When you draw in it, it plays the Four Seasons: it’s an activity book, a herbarium, a sketchbook... The orchestra playing the music is inside the book, on the other side of each page... drawings come to life and join the orchestra in an imaginary space. The book accompanies Anthony throughout the seasons until his eleventh birthday.

Les Contes D'Hoffmann

Among DVDs of "Hoffmann" currently available, this is the only one that even begins to stand comparison with the superlative Powell and Pressburger film (whose ideas it occasionally borrows). Olivier Py's baroque imagination, which sometimes leads him into self-indulgence and incoherence, is well suited to bringing out this opera's darkness and he does an excellent job

La pietra del paragone

LA PIETRA DEL PARAGONE (The Touchstone) concerns the Count Asdrubale who is wealthy and therefore of great interest to many women – notably Aspasia, Fulvia, and Clarice. Only Clarice, however, loves him for something other than his riches. There are also male hangers-on: the corrupt journalist Macrobio, the poetaster Pacuvio, and Giocondo, who is Asdrubale's true friend, but who has his own eyes on Clarice. To test his friends and would-be fiancées, Asdrubale pretends that he has been bankrupted. Sure enough, only Clarice and Giocondo stand by him, and when his fortune is "miraculously" saved, the three have the last laugh on everyone else... or do they? This production is set in what looks like the early 1960s. But the real innovation is the use of blue screen technology: using tiny cameras and sets, along gigantic screens hanging over the stage, a kind of video mixing makes the singers appear to inhabit any number of fanciful settings and perform a myriad of improbable actions.
