Winter Solstice

When Elfrida Philips abandons London for a country village, she settles in quickly. She is very poor, but has a tiny cottage, her four-legged friend Horace, and friendships of good neighbors. Tragedy upsets her newfound tranquillity, and she takes refuge in a rambling house with a new gentleman friend in Corrydale. But the group proves to be greater than the sum of its ill-fitting parts, and as the solstice passes, and as Christmas approaches, the healing power of love, begins to work its magic. The Gate of Eden: Part One - Mr. Falconer

The story concerns the relationship between Peter, a 15 year old boy, and Mr Faulkner, an old man whom he befriends. Mr Faulkner used to be a school teacher but had retired after allegations were made about him by a pupil. There was still gossip about him in the town. Mr Faulkner teaches Peter a lot about literature and introduces him to poetry and when Peter returns to school the two of them correspond. The friendship between them is threatened when Peter starts going out with Sue who disapproves of him spending time with the old man.

Going Back

A remote stone house nestles peacefully on the edge of the Yorkshire moors. In the garden. Faith Armstrong describes the flowers and the late afternoon skies to Jack, her blind husband. "The sun is almost setting. The sky is blue, with ... those little puffy clouds like meringues. There are still leaves on the trees. Oh . quite a few birds are gathering . " All is peaceful. As they talk, a small figure appears walking towards the cottage on the moorland road. Slowly it becomes recognisable as the Armstrong's son David. David's arrival is unexpected. He left home three years ago, and Faith and Jack have heard nothing from him until now. Things at home have changed a lot in those three years. His father has gone blind, and his brother Malcolm is now engaged 'to Heather. David's former girlfriend. The family are curious. Why has David suddenly decided to return home? How long is he staying? Is he in trouble?
