The Wrestler

With good guidance from director Zeki Okten but an uninspired script, this story of a brother and his Turkish family influenced by old and new traditions is somewhat uneven. Bilal (Tarik Akan) is devoted to the art of wrestling, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were both champions at the sport. Aside from his interest in wrestling for its own sake, Bilal has a chance to win a provincial wrestling contest and thereby bring home a considerable cash award for his efforts -- and so his days are spent in training for the event. Meanwhile, his brother and sister-in-law and their daughter have come back home after living in Germany for 12 years and are finding the adjustment to their cultural roots a bumpy ride. As long scenes of well-oiled and slippery wrestlers in action prepare viewers for Bilal's big event, the struggle of these men is reminiscent of the struggle of Bilal's family to come to grips with a world they may not be able to accept unconditionally.

The Enemy

Ismail (Aytac Arman) is the educated Turk who travels to Asia from Istanbul to escape crushing unemployment in this somber social drama. With an ailing mother-in-law, a bitter wife, and a pretty young daughter to support, he takes a job as a dog killer. Ismail is saddened to see young women his daughter's age forced into prostitution. When he returns home to ask his father and brother for an advance on his inheritance, his wife leaves him. The enemy in question refers to unemployment.

The Herd

Because of a local blood feud, a peasant family decides to sell its sheep - a most precious commodity - in far away Ankara. During their long train ride, bribes must be paid to petty officials, sheep are stolen or die in the packed, airless wagons, and the sick wife of one of the family's sons becomes deathly ill.

The King of the Street Cleaners

The Confused Groom

While Serpil pretends to be a religious village girl to his rich uncle she gets cought at an erotic party. Her uncle sees what she actually is than he forces her to marry simpleton Apti or she and her family cannot inherit his fortune.

Yearning

The soft spot in her heart for her composer remains unfilled of a star performer, after she's given a red handkerchief as a farewell. She must make her final decision despite a hearing loss risking her promising career.
