A modern-day children’s fairy tale that is also a parody of prank films which, in 1980s Israel, were a highly popular film genre. In the magical land of Bubble Gum where all children’s dreams are made, live two princesses: the kind-hearted Tzipi (Tsippi Shavit) and her wicked sister, Pitzi (Seffy Rivlin). Every year on 1 April (April Fools’ Day), the princesses’ birthday, the two hold a prank competition amongst themselves, with the winner getting to rule the land of Bubble Gum for one year. Rounding off Shavit and Rivlin’s adventure and prank fest is a talking robot and a group of children including one Natasha Braunstein – who will go on to become US actor Natasha Lyonne of Orange is the New Black and Russian Doll fame.

Fictitious Marriage

When Night Falls

Giora (Assi Dayan) runs a bar and dreams of opening a restaurant. He has made a mess of his life — his marriage is in trouble, since he is pathologically cheating on his wife; his parents (Yosef Millo and Orna Porat) have separated; and his father arrives for an extended visit from Nahariya. Giora spends time with his army buddies, recalling their experiences during the War in Lebanon. His father is undergoing a major life crisis and finds both the loneliness of the city and his son's lifestyle unappealing. As a non-Jew in a Jewish society, he feels estranged, an outsider who has never been able to adapt, and contemplates suicide. Eventually, Giora's parents decide to attempt a reconciliation, until tragedy strikes.

Beyond the Walls

In Israel's Central Prison, the security officer is corrupt, supplying drugs and stirring the hatred between Jewish and Arab prisoners to his advantage. Uri, in for 12 years for armed robbery, and Issan, in for 50 years for PLO violence, command the respect of their cells. When the Arabs are framed for the murder of a Jewish prisoner and a young inmate commits suicide rather than lie about what happened, Uri and Issan form an unlikely partnership, leading the security block on a strike. Prison officials try to break it. In the background are Uri's daughter and Issan's wife, women of beauty and passion who embody the distance from inside a cell to the outside.

Hole in the Moon

Although conceived in the style of Mekas’ “Hallelujah the hills” (1962), it’s an authentically Israeli satire, an openly rebellious and individualistic expression that poked fun at the sacred myths of earlier zionist films. The technique of film within the film is used to portray cinema as reflection of the imagination, a miracle based on dreams and fantasies that take on concrete characteristics – parallel to the miracle of Israel, the dream that has become reality. Although not a commercial success, its importance is beyond any measure, though it remains a unique experiment, boldly uncommercial and subversive, out of any context in that patriotic, ideological epoch.
